Flesch Leading by Five at Reno-Tahoe Open

Steve Flesch, chasing his third career victory, opened a five shot lead at the Reno-Tahoe Open. Birdies on the last two hole ended his day on a windy day in the slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains. A trio of golfers are at ten under par in second place; tour rookie John Merrick, Australian Steve Allan, and Todd Fischer who’s playing on a sponsor’s exemption. If the wind doesn’t blow a lot of players get right back in to the hunt. If the wind blows like Saturday a par round from Mr. Flesch will make it tough on the chasers to go low enough to catch him. That of course will be the hard part for the leader.

Steve Flesch is trying to run and hide from the rest of the field in search of his third career victory.  "It was a lot like playing yesterday afternoon to be honest with you," said Flesch, a 40-year-old left-hander from Kentucky who has earned more than $13 million in 11 years on tour. "I think today I was a little more conservative because of the wind. I picked my spots out there where I tried to be aggressive." Mr. Flesch birdied the last two holes for a 69 and the largest 54 hole lead on tour this year.

Rookie John Merrick had six birdies and two bogeys for a 68 and a tie for second at ten under par with Steve Allan and Todd Fischer.  Mr. Merrick has missed the cut in five of his last seven events is currently 141st on the money list.  "It’s nice to see your name on the leaderboard. Mine hasn’t been up there much this year," he said. "I’ve been trying a little bit too hard I think. This week I’ve been trying not to put too much pressure on myself."  The wind raised havoc with club choice while trying to factor in the additional distance gained at this altitude.  "I hit 6-iron into No. 9 today and it’s a 615-yard, par 5," Merrick said. "The winds all over the place. … One second it’s downwind. The next second it’s into the wind."

Mr. Fischer has only played in two tour events this year and missed the cut in both, is playing on a sponsor’s exemption.  "It was the only one I was looking forward to all year because I knew I was in it," he said.

If the wind doesn’t blow a lot of guys will have a chance to catch Mr. Flesch.  If it does blow, his lead will be that much harder to overcome.  Mr. Allan, who two years ago lead by two going into the final but missed a four foot putt for bogey and victory. "For him, I think a par round would be pretty good and make it tough on us," Allan said.
