Tweets of the week: Captain’s picks, Stenson cartoons, Baba Booey returns
Heading into a lull between two FedExCup Playoff events this week, we’ve had no shortage of great chatter on social media, thanks to Henrik Stenson’s resounding victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship, the finalization of the Presidents Cup squads and an unexpected retirement on the LPGA Tour.
First, we have an item from Presidents Cup captain’s pick Jordan Spieth. The 20-year-old has been one of the hottest players on Tour in the last three months, and his “no status to Tour winner” saga has been captivating, to say the least. In his rookie year, Spieth has won, placed second twice and finished inside the top 25 in 11 of 21 events.
Captain Couples gave Spieth the nod, despite his ranking of 22nd in Presidents Cup qualifying. He correctly acknowledged that the rookie only had one year in which to accumulate points, and that his youth and enthusiasm might be a rallying point for the team now and for years to come.
Spieth tweeted the following after learning that he, along with Webb Simpson, had been selected as captain’s picks.
Graham DeLaet, who has had no shortage of good form himself as of late, vaulted into the eighth spot on the International side with a strong showing at the Deutsche Bank Championship, becoming the first Canadian since Mike Weir to secure a spot on the Presidents Cup roster. The event marked his 12th top-25 finish in 24 starts on the PGA Tour this year, including a T2 at The Barclays and a third-place finish at The Travelers Championship.
The newly bearded Canadian tweeted the following to captain’s pick Spieth after Couples announcement.
Never one to shy away from controversy (or a budding controversy), Jason Sobel tweeted the following in defense of Presidents Cup stalwart Jim Furyk, who found himself on the outside looking in after the captain’s picks announcement despite his 5-0 record in the 2011 Presidents Cup.
Next, we have a retweet of a tweet from Steve Elkington, proprietor of SecretintheDirt.com. If you’re aware (and you shouldn’t be, since you only read GolfWRX), Secret is famous for their cartoons. With his final-round 66, the Swede secured both a measure of validation for the long road back from a nasty slump, and perhaps more importantly, a Secret in the Dirt cartoon.
Stenson retweeted the cartoon, with his own inquisitive addendum: “why smaller biceps?”
Stenson wasn’t the only one doing significant things at TPC Boston. Check out this tweet from TaylorMade showcasing one of their most notable staffers, Dustin Johnson, testing a prototype ball in Norton ahead of the Deutsche Bank Championship.
39-year-old Sophie Gustafson announced that she was stepping away from the LPGA Tour via Twitter. Gustafson, who has won 16 times on the Ladies European Tour, is expected to play that circuit exclusively after a brief break from competition.
Finally, we have a couple items from the always entertaining Keegan Bradley via his Instagram account. The first features Bradley in a tee shirt with a graphic that pays homage to his good friend Jason Dufner’s most noted pose.
The second shows the custom stamping the golfer has on his new Cleveland wedge, which pays homage to….well, Baba Booey, and by extension, Bradley’s favorite radio host, Howard Stern and the “baba booey-ers” of the PGA Tour galleries. Whether you think the baba booey wedge is cool or not, everyone should agree on one thing…Bradley’s personal “KB” logo stamping was poorly executed.

With the PGA Tour across the border in Canada this week, GolfWRX Tour Photographer Greg Moore stayed stateside and headed to the OccuNet Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank in Amarillo, Texas.
It’s always interesting to see what the guys are playing on the KFT, and this week certainly hasn’t disappointed so far, with some incredible wedge stamping on display.

Keegan’s name has been brought up on Howard’s show before (Gary saying that Keegan was a big fan)….
Too bad Keegan did’nt get “Howard Stern’s pe&!s” stamped on the wedge instead.

Love the wedge. It will probably get him invited to be a guest on Howard Stern. I think he’s jealous Dufner got on there, although it was one of the most boring interviews I’ve ever hear Stern do.
