Player not the only golfer to go “naked”
It has been widely reported that 77-year-old golfing legend Gary Player will appear in the coming “Body Issue” of ESPN the Magazine.
For those not familiar, the Body Issue features athletes in the buff and highlights their world-class physiques.
While Player may go sans clothes in the photo shoot, many golfers have appeared “naked” on the course so to speak. And many golfers over the years have lost articles of clothing in pursuit of a championship.
Here are the top-10 moments of golfers losing their clothes.
10. Tiger Woods (2010 Memorial)
Golf is a unique sport in the sense that the fans are very close to the action. Being that close presents some hazards, most notably being struck by an errant shot. If a fan is struck the common protocol is for the Tour pro to sign a piece of clothing and give it to the fan. Hats, gloves and shoes have all been given away as a mea culpa. Tiger Woods may have the clubhouse lead when it comes to losing a piece of clothing to a fan.

9. Bubba Watson
Now, this is not technically on the golf course, but it is worth mentioning all the same. Bubba appears in the video below wearing nothing but overalls and hits a shot off of a two-liter bottle. This is quite a departure from the normally buttoned-up Watson.

8. Sergio Garcia
Sergio has always had a little bit of a temper on the golf course. He has been known to throw a club or two, but his most memorable going “naked” moment happened in 1999 at the World Match Play Championship when he threw a shoe into the crowd after hitting a poor shot.

7. Henrik Stenson
At the 2009 WGC-Cadillac Championship, Stenson found his ball in a hazard and was forced to play a shot from the water. Because he didn’t want to ruin his clothes with muddy water, he stripped down to his skivvies and played his ball. Unfortunately for Stenson, stripping down didn’t lead to a win as he finished tied for 77th.

6. Ty Webb
While he may be a fictional golfer, Ty Webb personifies cool. No scene personifies this better than when Webb sinks putt after putt in his bare feet.

5. John Daly
John Daly is legendary for a lot of things in professional golf. He is a major champion. He smokes. He drinks. And occasionally, he plays golf sans shirt. In the 2009 video below, he tees it up shirtless in Missouri. It’s not a good look.

4. Andres Harto
Andres Harto may not be a household name, but he is very recognizable these days thanks to the shot in the video below. Earlier this year at the Trophee Hassan II European Tour event, Harto found himself in the water. Because of the heat in Morocco, he did not have rain gear and was forced to play the shot pants-less. Mindful of pace of play, Harto then sauntered across the green to mark his ball, still without pants.

3. Tiger Woods
At the 2008 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, Tiger Woods was eyeing up a 24-foot putt for his 64th PGA Tour victory and fifth straight. As the putt curled into the hole, Tiger went “naked” and spiked his hat into the ground with Arnold Palmer looking on. It remains one of the defining images of Tiger’s career.

2. Bill Haas
Looking to clinch the FedEx Cup in 2011, Bill Haas found the hazard at No. 17 at the Tour Championship. The video below shows Haas sticking the shot to about two feet. A change of socks was in order for Haas, as he went on to win the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup.

1. Jean van de Velde
Perhaps the most famous case of a golfer going “naked” is associated with Jean van de Velde. Leading the 1999 British Open by three strokes heading into the final hole, it seemed van de Velde was destined for major championship glory. In fact, his name was in the process of being engraved on the trophy. And then it all went terrible wrong. The most famous image of No. 18 was Van de Velde removing his socks and shoes and jumping in a burn to play a shot. It is an image that will be forever associated with choking in sports and golfers going “naked.”

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience
This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.
I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.
With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.
Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!

Man, that put on 18 @Bay Hill. That was fun. Its easy to forget just how many superhuman things I’e seen him do over the years, and thats the reason why sometimes its all about Tiger. I read a story like that, and I leave being grateful for the Tiger highlight. You guys know what you’re doin writing these things.

One thing Tiger can’t do is nail a high five. Always awkward.
