Daniel Summerhays Makes History on Nationwide Tour

Amateurs in professional golf is a throwback, just don’t tell that to Daniel Summerhays who has become the first amateur to ever win on the Nationwide Tour

BYU rising senior Daniel Summerhays shot a 2-under 69 in the final round and won the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational hosted by the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University. Summerhays put his name in the record books with the win becoming the first amateur to win on the Nationwide Tour.

Summerhays finished at 6-under 278 for the championship, two better than Chad Collins and Chris Nallen. Nallen and Summerhays were both tight throughout the final round, but Summerhays kept his cool and stayed consistent with his bogey-free back 9 while Nallen struggled coming down the stretch.

"Just not only to be the amateur winner but to win a Nationwide Tour event. There’s only a handful of guys that ever do that, and to have done it right now is tough to describe," Summerhays said after the round.

Summerhays is still debating whether or not to forego his senior year and give up his amateur status or not. "The decision to turn professional, it’s been a long process to figure out," said Summerhays. "Me and my wife (Emily) and my coach and my brother and my dad … we’ve all put in our two cents about what we should do. It’s still up in the air. I honestly have no idea what’s going to be best for me. But I do think that whatever I choose I’ll make work. I think whatever I do, if I just commit myself to getting better and continue to set goals my golf game won’t go anywhere."
