The Kyle Stanley Redemption

Redemption is a word that is often associated with someone’s performance, or lack thereof, during a time when the spotlight is on them. Some have spent their entire lives trying to turn their twist of dark fate into a victory quieting the critics and analysts. For Kyle Stanley, it took seven days. The winner of the Waste Management Phoenix Open this past Sunday shot a final round 65 that secured a one shot victory for his first on the PGA Tour. To be fair, Stanley’s win was as much Spencer Levin’s loss, as Levin gave up a six shot lead going into the final round.

Just a week prior, Stanley posted a triple bogey on the final hole of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines and went on to lose in a playoff to Brandt Snedeker. Stanley’s victory seemed so assured that the person in charge of painting the winner’s name on the ceremonial check already had finished painting “Kyle Stanley”. The collapse was reminiscent of Robert Garrigus in Memphis or Jean van de Velde at the British Open.

“I’m kind of in shock right now,” Stanley said.

Snedeker said he never wants to see golfers go through what Stanley went through at Torrey Pines.

“I don’t care who it is,” Stanley said. “Not even your worst enemy on the planet. Golf is such a funny game, and to have that kind of lead coming into the last hole and not to win is tough. It will be a tough night for him. But he’s an unbelievably talented player, and the sky’s the limit for him, and I hope he does not beat himself up too much over this.”

He didn’t.

Starting out eight shots behind Spencer Levin’s lead Sunday morning, redemption began just one week after a collapse. The magic isn’t in the score he posted, and it isn’t in the trophy hoisted high above his head after the victory. It is in how he rose from what just happened a week prior to playing clutch golf with an energy that resonated throughout the gallery.

“It just wasn’t my day, obviously,” Levin said. “But I gave it away, simple as that. You have a six-shot lead and lose, you gave it away. My hat’s off to Kyle. He played a great round. He went and got it. But if you’ve got a six-shot lead and don’t win, then I think it’s on the player with the lead, for sure.”

The eight shot comeback win was the third largest final round comeback by a winner in PGA Tour history. Stanley, a Clemson graduate and 2007 American Walker Cup member was in tears again, but this time they were tears of joy.

Did this victory erase what happened last week?

“Not really,” Stanley said. “I’m never going to forget that. I think it makes this one a lot sweeter, just being able to bounce back.”

It might not erase it, but the first win and the passing of “The Meltdown Baton” should help ease the pain a bit. Word is they waited until after all players were in to scribe “Kyle Stanley” on the check.
