McIlroy leaves agent, will form his own company

Published

on

Just a few months after changing every golf club in his bag, World No. 2-ranked golfer Rory McIlroy will be making another huge change.

The Irish Independent was first to report that McIlroy will leave his agent Conor Ridge and Horizon Sports Management Group to form his own company, made up of “friends, family and close confidants.” The Associated Press has since backed the story.

According to the AP’s source, a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity, McIlroy’s father Gerry is expected to play a prominent role in the company.

Horizon, who manages Graeme McDowell, negotiated Mcilroy’s huge endorsement contract with Nike that was announced in January, as well as recent deals with Omega and Bose. Since McIlroy signed a long-term deal with Horizon, the company stands to earn commission from the deals.

Less than two years ago, McIlroy left Chubby Chandler’s International Sports Management company, creating tension between the 24-year-old and friends Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke, who are managed by Chandler.

McIlroy won five times in 2012, including an eight-shot rout at the PGA Championship — his second major title. But he’s struggled to find his form in 2013, having yet to win on either the PGA or European tours.

His best finish came at the Valero Texas Open, where he finished second to Martin Laird.

McIlroy is scheduled to tee it up next at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in Surrey, England on Thursday.

Horizon still gets the commission on deals they brokered even if he leaves the company.

Good for him. He wants his posse and homies to get paid.
Why have his friends slave away at some $50K job when they can get paid the same thing by cleaning his shoes a few times.

It’s always interesting to see what the guys are playing on the KFT, and this week certainly hasn’t disappointed so far, with some incredible wedge stamping on display.
