Wilson holds off Garrigus, wins the Humana Classic

Making a putt when the tournament is on the line is tough. It’s an even more difficult feat when it’s near dark outside.

Mark Wilson holed a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th green of the Humana Classic under such circumstances for his fifth PGA Tour win, his third in less than 13 months.

Wilson received help from final group playing partner Robert Garrigus, whose three-putt on the 17th green gave him a one shot lead as Wilson approached the 18th tee.

The long-hitting Garrigus applied pressure on Wilson until the every end, however. Garrigus bombed his drive deep down the right rough line on No. 18, setting up a mid-ron approach into the par 5. That forced Wilson, who was in between clubs after his drive into the 18th fairway, to go for the green in two.

Wilson’s hybrid approach bounded over the green, setting up a tricky up and down. Garrigus then lashed a 5-iron to the front portion of the green, giving him a chance at eagle.

Wilson pitched to 10-feet, and then watched Garrigus’ bold eagle attempt roll over the left edge of the hole, which give Wilson a putt for the win.

Garrigus, who switched from an ultra-short putter to a broom-style flat stick this year, lipped out his birdie try, a second-consecutive three putt that dropped him from solo second into a three-way tie for second place at 22-under with John Mallinger and Sony Open Champion Johnson Wagner.

With the victory, Wilson earned $1,008,000 and 500 FedExCup points. He shot rounds of 66-62-69-69 to finish 24-under.
