Masters Odds and Sleepers
The Masters is less than three days away, and most of the talk is about whether Tiger Woods will win major No. 15. While Tiger is undeniably the favorite, the Masters has had a habit in recent years of throwing up a surprise winner.
Last year, Bubba Watson came out on top and the year before, the then-unknown South African Charles Schwartzel triumphed. Apart from Phil Mickelson’s three wins and Tiger last victory in 2005, the winner of the past few Masters has shocked many.
This year’s Masters odds list Tiger Woods as an overwhelming favorite at 3/1, with Phil Mickelson a distant second at 10/1 and two-time major champion Rory McIlroy at 12/1.
But check out the odds for the entire Masters field at the bottom of the page, as well as four players I think could surprise Tiger and the others below.
Sleepers
Rickie Fowler – 50:1 Odds
The 24-year-old has been making steady progress in his professional golf career since 2009. After a number of near-misses, his breakthrough win came at the 2011 Korean Open and then claimed his first Tour win at the 2012 Wells Fargo tournament. Both victories came at the expense of two-time major winner and world No. 2 Rory McIlroy.
Fowler has performed solidly in 2013 with six of seven cuts made and three top 10s on the Tour. He dueled with Tiger Woods during the final round of the Bay Hill Invitational only to come up short with three holes to play. He’s an impressive 10th in scrambling and 18th in scoring average at a solid 70.19 this season.
Fowler’s Masters record is OK, with made cuts from both of his two starts resulting in a T38 in 2011 and a T27 in 2012. If he can continue to improve and keep his solid short game in check Fowler’s all-orange outfit could be inside a green jacket come Masters Sunday.
Bill Haas – 66:1 Odds
The 2011 FedEx cup champion has slowly been returning to some of his best form in 2013. Haas has secured five top-10 finishes on Tour and sits third in greens in regulation. His sits in an impressive 14th position on the money list.
He performed strongly at three of the four majors in 2012 including a T37 at The Masters. In fact, his record at Augusta is solid with a T26, T42 and T37 at his only three appearances. I expect him to be in the mix again and might just surprise come late Sunday.
Henrik Stenson – 100:1 Odds
Stenson is no stranger to major championships and boasts five top 10s in the majors the last five years. He was in the mix at the Masters last year until a final round 81 dropped him down the leaderboard. Let’s not forget his victory at the 2009 Players Championship in what’s regarded as the unofficial fifth major in golf.
This year Stenson has had five top 10s on the PGA Tour and boasts an impressive 69.57 scoring average. This average is a result of an impressive tee-to-green game that sees him No. 1 on Tour in greens in regulation, driving accuracy and scrambling.
Can he be Sweden’s first male golfer to win a major?
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano – 200:1 Odds
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano is a relatively unknown Spanish touringf professional. The 32-year-old has quietly gone about his business the last few years and is starting to see some good results. This year on the Tour, he has made the cut on all three starts with two finishes in the top 10. He’s notched the top-10 finishes in strong fields featuring several of the world’s best players including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy.
Castano proved he could win by claiming both the 2011 Singapore Open and the 2012 Italian Open. He finished a disappointing 61st in his first Masters in 201,2 but played the weekend in three of the four majors in 2012. He possesses a strong short game which sees him ranked 12th in strokes gained in putting on the Tour. His strong putting will be a great asset around the slick Augusta National greens.
