Lead Tape Report: Chrome at the Cadillac Championship

Published

on

The PGA Tour is at Doral this week for the first time since 2016; the last champion who tamed the Blue Monster was Adam Scott. We have some clubs to inspect this week to see where the lead tape is, and we have a great selection to take a look at. We even cross over to the LPGA Tour for some very cool custom wedge work.

Gary Woodland

We have seen Gary Woodland use some lead tape on his Cobra OPTM driver, which boasts a Fujikura Black 8 X shaft that is tipped, but now we take a look here when it comes to wedges. His Cobra King 56-degree wedge has some tape on the back flange. This helps keep the ball driving on wedge shots from full to feel shots. It’s a popular placement for touring professionals on wedges and when it comes to lead tape. Woodland has a win this year at the Texas Children’s Houston Open and is currently 20th in the FedEx Cup standings.

Hideki Matsuyama

Hideki has a blend of clubs in his bag: some brand-new and others with plenty of experience over the years. Take a look at this Cobra RAD Speed 5-wood with lead tape on the back of the club head, even some added tape on the hosel above the ferrule, and at the base of the grip. This adds overall weight and certainly makes it feel personal. This Cobra model was released in 2021 and has some strong staying power in the bag.

If you’re into new putters, Hideki always provides entertainment, but this time we see he also adds some lead tape to those Scotty Cameron putters, too. Just a roll of the 1-inch wide tape on the sole of the putter will do.

This is Hideki’s first start since the Masters, where he finished tied for 12th place.

Jhonattan Vegas

An equipment free agent, Vegas has the unreleased Callaway blades in his bag. It always adds allure when clubs are more difficult to obtain, and not only that: his 4-iron has a strip of tape. Just a little more feel in the club head while swinging the long iron. We have also seen this set of irons in Min Woo Lee’s bag. Vegas has made 5 of 9 cuts this year with two top 25 finishes as he plays this Blue Monster this week.

Michael Kim

Michael Kim has the new GTS2 driver in his bag. We can see here with a little bit of tape on the toe. I notice a 13-gram weight at the front of the driver, and a 7-gram weight at the back. Pair that with a 44 1/2-inch shaft, and we have a nice feel of the club head and security of control with the driver. A shorter driver and more club head weight. The driver is 11 degrees and on the standard/neutral setting.

Lydia Ko

This photo is from last week’s Chevron Championship, and this wedge is earning triple crown rights in the lead tape world. Lydia’s wedge here has lead tape, a raw finish, and custom stamping. This can even go a step further with the custom grind as well for the large hand-stamped “G” for gap wedge. The custom Titleist logo lead tape is always a bonus as well. Lydia is an equipment free agent, so her back is always a source of interest. Her season has included shooting a 60 in the Wild Horse Pass 2026 at Whirlwind Golf Club at the end of March. This season, she is knocking on the door for a win. Ko has posted three top 5 finishes.

With the PGA Tour across the border in Canada this week, GolfWRX Tour Photographer Greg Moore stayed stateside and headed to the OccuNet Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank in Amarillo, Texas.

It’s always interesting to see what the guys are playing on the KFT, and this week certainly hasn’t disappointed so far, with some incredible wedge stamping on display.

It’s that sense of community that drives day-to-day interactions in the forums on topics that range from best driver to what marker you use to mark your ball. It even allows us to share another thing we all love – buying and selling equipment.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
