The surprising equipment issue Brooks Koepka faced at the Masters

What a difference a day – and a driver setting – can make for Brooks Koepka.

Koepka opened the 90th playing of the Masters Tournament in an even-par 72. While even par around any major championship venue is a good score, it’s even better when you’re playing with the wrong equipment. Or at least the wrong setting on your equipment.

Koepka started his first round, missing six of his first seven fairways, only to find out about a mysterious switch in the adapter setting on his Titleist GT3 driver.

Once adapting his swing to the B1 setting of the SureFit hosel, which lies .75 degrees flatter than the standard A1 setting, the preferred setting that Koepka says he was supposed to be in, the five-time major champion found another six fairways.

Although the difference between the two settings is less than a degree, the club Koepka used Thursday was set to a fade bias, which isn’t exactly the best shot shape for a right-handed golfer playing Augusta National.

“Yeah, just drove it better, Koepka said, after moving back to his normal A1 setting and finding 9-of-14 fairways in Friday’s second round, en route to a 3-under 69. “Some of my setting on the driver switched if A1 to B1. No one noticed it. Switching back to A1, which is what we usually had it and just driving it better.

Koepka is making his 11th Masters start in 2026. His best finishes came in 2019 and 2023, when he was runner-up to Tiger Woods and Jon Rahm, respectively.

With the driver under control, and the fact that Koepka ranks second in Strokes Gained: Approach on the PGA Tour, expect him to make a weekend charge at the lead.

This week, we have our Tour Photographer, Greg Moore, on the ground at the OccuNet Classic at Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas, for the 14th event of the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour season. With that, we see some great things in the Lead Tape Report as we roll into Amarillo.

Joel Thelen

Monday Qualifier, Joel Thelen is in the field this week. He has played on the Korn Ferry Tour for a full season in 2023, and he is back in action this week. A couple of clubs caught my eye this week in his bag.

First off: His trusted Titleist 816 H2 hybrid. This club came out in October of 2015, and it still remains strong in the bag. Also, take a look at this Odyssey White Hot OG 7, putting a capital S in the 7S model. This custom neck has some impressive lean for an arm-lock-style putter. The bottom of the putter is covered in tape for optimal weighting.

Mitchell Meissner

Taking a look at Mitchell Meissner’s bag this week, we have some great lead tape coverage. Top to bottom working from fairway metals, irons, and wedges. We can see on the short irons and wedges that there is tape at the base of the grip, adding a little counterbalance. Along with that, some tape on the short irons and wedges as well. Moving to his putter, he rolls the Odyssey 7 Bird putter. Meissner putts left-handed and strikes the ball right-handed.
