‘These things are like cheating!’ – GolfWRXer blown away by these Wilson irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been reacting to a rave review of Wilson’s Launch Pad 2 irons. WRXer ‘tatertot’ kicks off the discussion saying:

“I have a confession. Two years ago I finished the season with a .2 handicap.

Last year, I struggled with iron play. I ended last season with an index in the mid 3s. I thought it would fix itself, but this season was brutal. One round I shot a 72 with literally zero iron shots in the sweetspot. Everything was low. It was like I couldn’t find the lowspot in my swing anymore. After trying everything to fix it, I gave up. I bought a set of Wilson Launch Pad 2 irons. I was desperate.

These things are like cheating! It’s actually hard to hit a bad shot.

Caveat: While I can get the trajectory I want, these don’t spin much. And it’s hard move them right and left. But hitting a basic straight shot is stupid easy. I probably won’t play this forever, as I do like to work the ball and get more spin, but they made golf fun again when I was in a rut.”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts and experiences in response.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • 596: “I’m not as low as you are, but I was a 2 handicap playing SGI Ping G10.  Great irons. Shot in the 60s a few times with them. I’m 70 years old and frequently play SGI Cobra T Rail hybrid irons paired with lots of hybrids.  I’ve shot 71 a few times lately. Both times missed birdie putts on 18 to shoot my age.  I’ve shot half my age or under a number of times on 9 holes with SGI irons. It’s a lot of fun playing these irons and not stressing about hitting a dime size sweet spot.”
  • PEI_Golfer: “Years ago I played with a former PGA Tour winner while he was in for an LPGA event in town.  Had a set of R11’s in the bag and proceeded to shoot a blind 65 (I gave as much course info as I could).  He was point and shoot with insane distance control and flight.  Said he didn’t play that much any more (which was also a lie as he played almost daily).  Play what works.”
  • SoCalTitleist: “I’m not super low a 10 and was searching for the same thing . Just went to some rogue st max os graphite irons .  Super easy to swing.”

Slab city on the Korn Ferry Tour — Lead Tape Report

Published

on

This week, we have our Tour Photographer, Greg Moore, on the ground at the OccuNet Classic at Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas, for the 14th event of the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour season. With that, we see some great things in the Lead Tape Report as we roll into Amarillo.

Joel Thelen

Monday Qualifier, Joel Thelen is in the field this week. He has played on the Korn Ferry Tour for a full season in 2023, and he is back in action this week. A couple of clubs caught my eye this week in his bag.

First off: His trusted Titleist 816 H2 hybrid. This club came out in October of 2015, and it still remains strong in the bag. Also, take a look at this Odyssey White Hot OG 7, putting a capital S in the 7S model. This custom neck has some impressive lean for an arm-lock-style putter. The bottom of the putter is covered in tape for optimal weighting.

Mitchell Meissner

Taking a look at Mitchell Meissner’s bag this week, we have some great lead tape coverage. Top to bottom working from fairway metals, irons, and wedges. We can see on the short irons and wedges that there is tape at the base of the grip, adding a little counterbalance. Along with that, some tape on the short irons and wedges as well. Moving to his putter, he rolls the Odyssey 7 Bird putter. Meissner putts left-handed and strikes the ball right-handed.

  • macedan: “Started with a hand-me-down Golden Bear set from my brother when I was in high school, never really played more than once a year or got into the game until about summer of 2017. First purchased a set of Cleveland CG4’s (I actually really miss this set sometimes, soft & not terribly large for a GI iron), moved into Nike Vapor Fly’s by the end of the year. Those lasted until spring of 18 when I decided I wanted new, so I traded them in for TM Rbladez. Honestly, although I liked the Rbladez, poor decision on my part, I think this was really about the only time so far that after a week or two I was kicking myself for not staying with what I had. Rbladez stayed with me until late last summer when I switched to P790’s and (knock on wood) I am hoping this will be my longest lasting set.”
  • JimmyC59: “MacGregor Jack Nicklaus Triple Crown. Palmer The Standard. Still play these.”
