Aretera launches new AO2 wood shafts

Published

on

Aretera Golf is a new brand in the high tech world of golf shafts. Founded in 2024 by one of the most legendary shaft designers in recent times, Alex Dee. After 25 years at a premium shaft brand he started his own brand with a veteran group of golf executives. You have probably seen their EC1 Blue shaft as an up charge option in Callaway Elyte woods this year. Aretera set out to build the best performing shafts they possibly could regardless of how expensive the materials are and they are pushing the limits again with the new AO2 series.

The AO2 starts life as some ultra-premium, high-modulus carbon fiber. We hear those terms a lot in the shaft world but there are levels to the type and quality of carbon fiber used in golf shafts. Alex and his team looked to aerospace and F1 racing for thinner and stronger sheets of carbon fiber that offer the ability to layer more sheets in the same space for optimal performance. What they came up with is PowerGrid. PowerGrid is using these exotic and thinner, multi-directional, fibers in more layers to absorb stress and redistribute it along the weave. Aretera uses this in different locations and orientations to create stability where stress on the shaft is the highest.

If you are a shaft nut then you have heard of a shaft’s bias core, the innermost layers that create torsional stiffness for control and to resist twisting at impact. This bias core is usually just a few layers of carbon fiber laid at 45 degrees and then additional carbon layers go on top to adjust the bending stiffness of the shaft. Alex found that by alternating between 45 degree layers and 0 degree layers he was able to really dial in the torsional stiffness, more than he could by keeping them all on the inside of the shaft, while still getting the flex of the shaft correct. This opens up many doors for the shaft design and allows Alex to control the flex and torsional stiffness more independently so no matter the weight or flex you will be getting the same stability you need to hit better shots. Aretera uses about 16 to 20 layers of carbon fiber to get maximum performance out of the AO2 shafts while competitors use around 5 to 7 plies in their construction.

Aretera AO2 is going to be offered in the familiar two profiles, Blue and Gray, to suit a wide range of golfers. Both shafts have an active handle section for great feel and a firm mid section for high energy transfer and torsional stability. The difference between the 2 shafts is in the tip section. Both are stiff for consistent delivery and center contact on the club face but the AO2 Gray is about 7% more stout. For some players that stiffer tip might result in lower launch and spin but that will be swing dependent and your fitter can help you figure out what model is best for you.

It’s that sense of community that drives day-to-day interactions in the forums on topics that range from best driver to what marker you use to mark your ball. It even allows us to share another thing we all love – buying and selling equipment.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
