2022 RBC Heritage: Best prop bets
From the wide fairways and large, almost impossible greens of Augusta to the flatter, narrower Harbour Town course, its tree-lined fairways and smaller greens giving a huge push towards players that suit accurate iron shots over brute force, with a nod to those that can scramble should they be unfortunate enough to miss the short stuff.
Hardly an event that is ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’, with the world number two, five, eight and nine teeing it up in a powerful field, they take up an awful lot of the market, leaving us some juicy prices in another attempt at the prop bet column.
Corey Conners Top 20 +135
I am at a loss to work out how the Canadian is a plus figure to finish in the top-20 on a course that rewards accuracy and par-4 performance.
Recent form on tour has seen finishes of T6/T35/3/26/11, the latest being his third top-10 in a row at Augusta when he finished with a pair of birdies at his final two holes and rose to a best-ever 31st on the OWGR.
Even taking away his bronze medal at the Match Play, Conners ranks in the top-10 for greens-hit in his last four tournaments, in the top echelons for approaches and tee-to-green in this field, and eighth for par-4 performance over the year.
Last season, the 30-year-old went on a run of T14 at Texas, T8 at Augusta and T4 here, and there seems no reason he can’t repeat that after a similar handful of events.
Conners’ only win on tour came in Texas when he beat Lone Star State stalwart Charley Hoffman, a player with a couple of top finishes here, whilst fellow Texas winner Jordan Spieth’s three top-12 finishes at this coastal town also give encouragement.
When tied fourth here last season, Conners ranked seventh for driving accuracy, 18th for greens, sixth for putting average and second for par-4s. In new money, he was ninth off the tee, sixth tee-to-green and top-20 for around-the-green.
He is certainly no worse than last year and comes here in flying form. Make him the mainstay of your wagers this week.
Adam Hadwin Top 10 +550/Top 30 +150
With nothing in the price difference for top-20 and 30, launch into another Canadian to land a finish on one of the top three pages.
The 34-year-old man from Moose Jaw is in a rich vein of form this year, with eight starts yielding one top-five, two top-10s, one top-20 and a 26th place finish, and it’s even more encouraging that his three highest finishes have been in his latest trio of tournaments.
Ninth place at the Pete Dye-designed Sawgrass, seventh at Copperhead with tree-lined fairways and small greens, and a latest fourth in Texas are some of the best non-Masters form in the field, and it is no worry that he didn’t play Augusta as neither did recent winners, Wesley Bryan or C.T Pan.
Best strokes-gained-putting stats so far this season are when top-10 at the American Express and at The Players, both Dye influenced, whilst he averages around 15th for both approaches and tee-to-green for his last five completed events, and around 25th for around-the-green over the same period.
His rounds at Harbour Town are mixed, last year’s missed-cut via a poor opening 76 before an attempt to recover with 67, whilst he again spoilt his chances a year previously with a first round 72 before three decent rounds of 65/67/69.
Hadwin’s best finish of 22nd in 2017 came via ranking fourth for approaches, first for tee-to-green and fifth for around-the-green, and whilst he hasn’t repeated those figures yet, recent driving accuracy figures suggest he will leave himself plenty of chances to attack the scoring par-fours, for which he ranks 22nd overall for the year.
J.J Spaun Top 10 +750/Top 20 +300/Top 30 +180
31-year-old Californian John Michael is yet another to come here in some of the best form of his career and looks under-rated by the oddsmakers in most markets.
After a progressive profile on the Canadian Tour, winning once (Conners in third) and running up several sequences of top finishes, he made the step up to Korn Ferry level, winning once and losing in a three-man play-off (Collin Morikawa joint runner-up), before becoming one of the most promising rookies on the PGA Tour.
During his first spell at the highest level, Spaun recorded top-10 finishes at Torrey Pines and at TPC Scottsdale, at the Byron Nelson, Barracuda, CJ Cup and Mayakoba before untimely being misdiagnosed with the wrong type of diabetes.
As befits the error, Spaun has taken time to re-adjust to a different lifestyle, diet, exercise routine and body shape, but after locking up his card with a tied-second at Albertsons Boise Open in a field of short-track, tree-lined specialists, he has shown very progressive form in 2022.
From 11 starts since the turn of the year, the San Diego alumni has a top-20 at Pebble Beach, top-30 finishes at the American Express, Honda and Valspar and a latest debut 23rd at Augusta.
In between that, Spaun recorded his first victory, an impressive final day paving the way for a two-shot win, having started the day with a double-bogey.
Having been ‘lost for a couple of years’ and now with a worst of 29th for accuracy off the tee and two recent top-10 rankings for tee-to-green, JJ can prove that he is back concentrating on his best play – fairways and greens.

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience
This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.
I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.
With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.
Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!
