My 2021: What I enjoyed sharing most with you

Published

on

In January, I published a bit on 10 stories that I’d love to cover in 2021. You can find it here. I’ll address my success in achieving those goals in an early-January 2022 post. I’ll also offer 10 more goals for 2022, because that’s what pandemics are for: setting goals.

In the meantime — during this final week of 2021 — take a look back with me at what I enjoyed sharing most with you during this 57th year of my life.

The fiction

A Golfing Memoir in Monthly Tokens was a project that editor-in-chief allowed me to undertake this year. For nine months, I was able to keep up with a schedule that allowed a new installment every 30 days. Fall hit, and with it came coaching, the classroom, the yearbook, and the death of the owner of the real-life Klifzota.

I’ll do my best, over the next two weeks of rest, to add an October installment of Monthly Token and then finish the 12 months soon after. It’s a heck of a story, and as soon as I figure out what it is, I’ll write it!

The interviews

People (Michael Croley), places (Fox Chapel), and books (A Course Called America) all qualify as interview in my flextionary. They have stories to tell, be they subjects alive, deceased, made of paper or earth. My job is fairly easy: show up, shut up, listen, organize, release.

The Rundown

It didn’t matter what the occasion was, I loved writing the recaps. Weekly Tour Rundowns or daily major championship Five Things We Learned are opportunities to coagulate the flow of information and distill the finest elixir for your consumption. Damn, that sounds tasty.

It’s important to give equal exposure to all tours, all genders, all levels of competition. That’s what I strive to pitch, and that’s what my editor seeks to publish. Can we do better? Always, and that’s what propels us onward.

You all know the storylines from each day and each week of competition. I strive to find the allusions, aspersions, and asides that wrap those storylines in a proper cloak. Whether it is an international team competition or a common tour event, you’ll find some sort of run-down rundown with my name in the byline.

The Others

Whether it’s a direct letter to Mr. Michael Whan of the USGA, an apparel review, or a…well, that’s pretty much it. The fiction really did take up a lot of my writing hours. Well, here’s to more others in 2022.

I appreciate having you along for the journey!

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience

Published

on

This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.

I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.

With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.

Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!
