Tour Rundown: Two playoffs and almost a third
On día de todos los santos, three golf tournaments came to nip-tuck conclusions from Cypress to Bermuda to Florida. At two sites, an extra hole was required to decide the winner. At the third, an 11th-hour birdie kept two other golfers from a playoff. With a Masters and the Race To Dubai still to be decided, professional golf is alive and well as we enter…November? Indeed! Such is 2020. Let’s get to it and run down this week’s tour triumphs and troubles.
Brian Gay claims fifth tour win at Wyndham Clark’s expense
Wyndham Clark was on a mission. In search of his first tour title, he might have envisioned that Kramer Hickock, Doc Redman, or Denny McCarthy were his staunchest challengers. Sneaking up unnoticed, as he has done throughout his career, was Joseph Brian Gay. From right of everything on 18, Gay tucked a wedge inside five feet, then converted the birdie putt to match Clark’s 15-under total. While Clark had struggled over the closing stretch, playing the last six in plus one, Gay was a man on fire. He had four birdies over the same third, offsetting a ridiculous bogey at the par-five seventeenth.
On the playoff’s only hole, both Clark and Gay drove the fairway and both snuggled approach shots inside ten feet. Gay putted first, and sliced his putt for three into the center of the cup (really, watch his stroke on Twitter…big-time loop!) Clark stepped up…and missed. On hold was the dream of a tour title, but for Gay, it was his first in seven years, and it put an end to what he labeled months of miserable play. The tour moves to Houston’s retooled Memorial Park course next week before setting the GPS for Augusta and the year’s final major.
Shinkwin claims first Euro title at Cyprus debut
England’s Callum Shinkwin fared better than Wyndham Clark, half a world away. As the island nation of Cyprus welcomed a European Tour event for the first time, Shinkwin did battle with much of northern Europe. First it was Finland’s Sami Valimaki who threatened to run away with the tournament. Next came Scotland’s Rober MacIntyre, who closed with 65 to pull within two shots of the top spot. Finally, another Fin, Kalle Samooja, closed with a pair of 64s on the weekend to equal Shinkwin’s effort.
The playoff took place on the watery 18th, a reachable gambler’s delight of a par five. Samooja had decent vibes, having played it in eight total strokes over the weekend’s two rounds. The only fly in that ointment was that Shinkwin had done it in six, courtesy of a pair of eagles. Both golfers found the putting surface in three, and Shinkwin struck first. His longer birdie putt found pay dirt. Face with an eerily-similar birdie effort to the one he faced in regulation, Samooja gave it a bit too much stroke, and it did a hard lip-out into lost dream land. The Tour remains in Cyprus for event number two in the country’s history, the Cyprus Showdown over the same golf course.
Darren Clarke snatches hope from Furyk and Langer in Florida
A day after making eagle at the last for 62, Darren Clarke faced a more daunting task at the par-five closing hole. The northern Irishman stood locked at -16 with Bernhard Langer and Jim Furyk, desperately hoping to avoid extra holes. After finding the fairway with his drive, Clarke ripped his approach into the heart of the green, leaving some 30 feet for eagle. No need for drama here. Two putts would do the trick. The 2011 champion golfer of the year lagged his approach putt to 16 inches, then tapped in the remainder for the birdie he needed. The triumph was his first on the USA’s senior circuit, and his first tournament title in nine years.
For the ageless Langer and the rookie Furyk, a victory would have meant the world. The former seeks a 42nd Champions Tour title, while the later wishes to distance himself from Phil Mickelson, in the race for rookie of the year. Also smarting from Clarke’s heroics was Miguel Angel Jimenez, who reached 15 deep at the 16th green, but could go no lower. The Champions Tour concludes its season next week at the Charles Schwab Cup championship, in Phoenix.
