Forum Thread of the Day: “Gapping between 4-iron and 3-wood”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from b.mattay who is on the hunt for a club to fill his yardage between his 3-wood and 4-iron. B.mattay hasn’t found a hybrid or 3-iron that he’s entirely satisfied with yet, and our members have been dishing out their advice and suggestions to him in the forum thread.

Here are a few posts from the thread but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Z1ggy16: “I’d pick a high launching 5w and play it -.5 or .75”. F9 with the rails at 18* might fit the bill as a good all-rounder. Maybe not great off the tee for distance, but gets out of the rough with the rails, and should hold most greens.”
  • chiva: “Ping G410 hybrid adjusted open and flat?”
  • cardoustie: “Get the Cally apex 20 … very anti-left and iron like.”
  • uglande: “I love playing a 7 wood — money out of the rough and hitting into greens. I just ordered the Titleist TS2 version but last year played with the 917 F2, which sits square and has the adjustability to dial it in so that it gives you a good trajectory without ballooning. I also use a low-launch shaft for this reason. Lots of guys on tour play 7-woods (Charles Howell, Kevin Mitchell, Miguel Angel Jimenez) in part because some of the manufacturers make more players versions of these clubs, unlike the sky-ball launchers of the past. You obviously hit driver a long way. I would think you could hit into a lot of par 5s with 7 wood.

This gap always gives me trouble when trying to build my bag. I’ve finally settled on the best for my game. I use a Callaway 5-wood mainly because their adjustable hosel is the best in the business. I’ll either put it to 19* or 20* depending on how hot the wood is, and it always gaps perfectly between my 23* 4i and 3wood. I’ll also buy the Callaway 3W in 13.5* and loft it up as need be for gapping as well.

Slab city on the Korn Ferry Tour — Lead Tape Report

Published

on

This week, we have our Tour Photographer, Greg Moore, on the ground at the OccuNet Classic at Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas, for the 14th event of the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour season. With that, we see some great things in the Lead Tape Report as we roll into Amarillo.

Joel Thelen

Monday Qualifier, Joel Thelen is in the field this week. He has played on the Korn Ferry Tour for a full season in 2023, and he is back in action this week. A couple of clubs caught my eye this week in his bag.

First off: His trusted Titleist 816 H2 hybrid. This club came out in October of 2015, and it still remains strong in the bag. Also, take a look at this Odyssey White Hot OG 7, putting a capital S in the 7S model. This custom neck has some impressive lean for an arm-lock-style putter. The bottom of the putter is covered in tape for optimal weighting.

Mitchell Meissner

Taking a look at Mitchell Meissner’s bag this week, we have some great lead tape coverage. Top to bottom working from fairway metals, irons, and wedges. We can see on the short irons and wedges that there is tape at the base of the grip, adding a little counterbalance. Along with that, some tape on the short irons and wedges as well. Moving to his putter, he rolls the Odyssey 7 Bird putter. Meissner putts left-handed and strikes the ball right-handed.
