5 highlights from Friday afternoon’s foursomes action

Published

on

What an afternoon it was for Team Europe at Le Golf National. Down 3-1 entering the foursomes, Europe showed once again that they are superior in this particular format, sweeping the session. Surprisingly, this was Europe’s first sweep in a session of foursomes, and the first time they recorded a perfect session since 1989 at the Belfry. Here are five highlights from this afternoon foursomes action:

5) Sergio Garcia Shows His Ryder Cup Class And Emotion Early On

So much pressure was on Garcia’s shoulders this afternoon, with many people questioning the decision to include him in the European side. Well, in today’s foursomes action, the Spaniard proved why he is such a pivotal member of Team Europe. Holing putts, energizing the crowd and bringing out the best in Ryder Cup rookie Alex Noren. Garcia showed he’s ready to be more than a bit-part player at this year’s event.

4) Tommy Fleetwood Takes Off Where He Left Off This Morning

A Ryder Cup star is born. Tommy Fleetwood took down “Captain America” and “The Big Cat” earlier today in spectacular fashion, and the Englishman continued to impress as the day progressed. Fleetwood’s putter was red-hot in the afternoon’s foursomes, and he now looks odds-on to feature in every session this week. Europe may well need that from him.

3) Bubba Watson Pranks His Own Partner

After Webb Simpson had rolled in a birdie putt in foursomes action on the back nine, Bubba Watson thought it might be a good idea to prank his partner. Watson seemed very pleased with himself afterwards, and that’s all that matters. Bubba and Webb lost 4&2.

2) Ian Poulter’s Roar

Very little is more synonymous with the Ryder Cup than Ian Poulter’s pure unadulterated emotion. Poulter showed once again that he is Team Europe’s talisman. Looking cool, calm and collected when necessary, and bringing out the “Poulter Roar” at the right moments.

1) Rory McIlroy’s Miraculous Approach

It was not a good day for Rory McIlroy overall. After failing to make a birdie in four-ball action earlier in the day, McIlroy looked far from his best in the afternoon, with his putting, in particular, raising concerns. Thomas Bjorn has a huge decision ahead, to sit the Irishman for a session or hope he finds his best form over the weekend. Despite not being at his best, McIlroy’s fabulous approach to set up a birdie on the 13th hole showed just what he’s capable of and it was undoubtedly the shot of the afternoon session.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
