Tony Romo is trying to earn a Web.com Tour card

Published

on

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current NFL analyst, Tony Romo, is ready to take a crack at earning a Web.com Tour Card. The 38-year-old will tee it up this Wednesday at the Web.com Tour Q-school pre-qualifier at Lantana Golf Club in Texas. Romo will compete as an amateur under a plus-0.4 handicap. The Californian will be the first former professional athlete to attempt the feat since ex-tennis pro, Mardy Fish, attempted to do so back in 2014.

Earlier in 2018, Romo made his PGA Tour debut at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship on a sponsor exemption and then competed in a local U.S. Open qualifier. On both occasions, he failed to break 77.

Romo tees it up in the pre-qualifying section on Wednesday morning at 9.45 ET. The former Pro Bowl quarterback will be hoping to claim one of the 228 spots on offer for pre-qualifiers to advance to the first qualifying stage which begins on September 25th.

As always with prominent sports stars, current or former, attempting to compete on any golf tour, there is sure to be a lot of interest to see how Romo performs in Texas. Steph Curry’s nightmare day two at the Ellie Mae Classic will serve as a stark warning to Romo not just about the difficult task that he faces, but also the scrutiny he will face.

Unlike the rest of the competitors in the pre-qualifiers with dreams of making the Web.com Tour, Romo’s high profile makes him an easy target should things not go to plan. However, Romo proved before that he has plenty of talent at the game, making sectional qualifying at the U.S. Open one year before a weather delay forced him to withdraw due to his commitments with the Dallas Cowboys.

How do you expect Romo to get on at Lantana Golf Club? Will you be rooting for him?

Let us know what you think?

What I find shocking is he was a Pro-Bowl quarterback

The couple times ive seen him play he didnt look like a .4 hdcp. More like a 5-7 id guess…. Also if he is good enough to try qualifying with a .4 does that mean im good enough at a +1.8? BC i dont think i am. Those web.com guys are good, real good. He would be better off chasing a local mini tour around for a year or 2 and by then he would be getting up there in age.

Good luck trying but he has zero chance! He’s a scratch golfer and you need to be closer to +5. He wouldn’t be the best player at any of my clubs.

+5 is IMHO too good, but I agree with his +0.4 he is just a celebrity, zero chance of making to the web.com

Starting to get sick of hearing about this guy… I get it he was an ok QB in the NFL for a decade or so and he won an amateur golf tournament (at his home course). But he doesnt have the game to compete at a higher level in golf. There are a TON of WRXers that truly are better golfers than this dude.

Not sure what qualifies for “a ton,” but I was searching through tournaments earlier today, I saw that he also finished 8th this year at the Carlton Woods Invitational — LOTS of good players in that event. In fact, the guy who won the Carlton Woods this year also just won the Canadian Mid-Am this past weekend. Romo is a very good amateur — inconsistent, but very good. I would certainly bet against him making it past 2nd stage of Q-School, but I would not at all be surprised to see him get past pre-qual and first stage.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
