Ailing Adam Scott Shoots Course Record

Adam Scott and Johnson Wagner set a new course record with a round of 9 under 63 on Thursday in Humble, TX.

Adam Scott was sick before his plane ever landed in Houston. He had swollen glands and could hardly get out of bed.

This doesn’t sound like the prelude to a record round, but it is. Scott fired off a nine under 63 on Thursday to lead the Shell Houston Open at the Tournament Course at Redstone. The only unfortunate part of the day is that Scott isn’t alone atop the leader board. Johnson Wagner kept pace later in the day and also finished with a 63. Wagner previously shared the course record with Bubba Watson with a 64 in the first round last year.

Adam Scott played the course nearly perfectly, hitting 17 of 18 greens in regulation and 28 putts for the day. He jumped right out of gates with a birdie at 10, and then made five more over the course of the next eight holes. With three more on the front, Scott put together a great round. With a driving distance of 319.5 yards and a GIR percentage of nearly 95%, Scott was destined to lead.

"I just feel really comfortable on this golf course," said Scott. "A lot of the shots really fit my eye. I feel like I know where to hit it. And few pins that were in tough positions, I picked a target and managed to stick to it."

Playing the way he was, it looks like Adam Scott may want to wait a couple of weeks before he starts taking that penicillin.

Johnson Wagner chose a different approach to his record round. Whereas Scott chose the ‘no-bogeys, all birdies’ route, Wagner threw in an eagle at the par five eighth hole.

Johnson Wagner, referring to the eighth, "I didn’t stare it down for long. About a foot and a half. It was nice. The shot came out a little bit right of where I wanted it. Trying to go to the center of the green. Came out just perfectly, landed on the front, and rolled all the way up there. Heard my mom whistling. She’s got a loud whistle."

The Tournament Course at Redstone was setup with the players going to Augusta in mind. The greens were playing fast and firm, and there was virtually no rough to speak of. The only thing that the players won’t have to worry about next weeks is the Texas wind.

Phil Mickelson made his first appearance today, and shot and even round of 72. "This is my first time on this golf course, and I really enjoy playing it. I think it’s very well done. It’s in incredible shape. The setup really makes it a great spot for guys to come here and get ready for next week. And so I’ve been very impressed with that and look forward to the next three days."

At GolfWRX, we are a community of like-minded individuals who all experience and express our enjoyment of the game in many ways.

It’s that sense of community that drives day-to-day interactions in the forums on topics that range from best driver to what marker you use to mark your ball. It even allows us to share another thing we all love – buying and selling equipment.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
