Mr. Consistency: A video analysis of Jim Furyk’s swing

The 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles will be Jim Furyk’s ninth Ryder Cup appearance, which is proof of his consistency throughout his career. Although he has a swing often pegged as “quirky” and “unconventional,” it’s also a move that’s proven to be successful and dependable.

I love Furyk’s swing. He probably does too since he’s won over 50 million dollars, 16 PGA Tour events and a U.S. Open with it. His swing is wildly unique, but uncommonly consistent. I often think that it’s very uniqueness may be the reason it IS so consistent. As the great Mr. Arnold Palmer said: “Swing YOUR swing!”

Dennis,
I was one of the people who disliked the Fowler analysis, but I really enjoyed watching this one. Furyk is such a great player and it was nice to see his seeing here.

  Thx Kyle. I played with Jim once and I wish I my Flightscope on him. He hit every shot on the dead center of the face, or darn close. Amazing.

Everybody stands further from ball than Jim. actually Phil stands a conventional distance but increases his upper body distance as he starts down.

Reason Furyk and Phil deliver the club differently is because Furyk is very close the ball and Phil is much farther away from it.

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience

This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.

I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.

With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.

Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!
