Ryan Moore Captures Wyndham in Playoff

There’s something to be said about a PGA Tour winner without a logo anywhere on his person. More than one thing in fact can be said; you might call it a nice clean look, but he’s got that scrofty beard thing going. He’s just being his own man by not shilling for the corporate marketing machine that attempts to convince schmucks like me that I can play the same kind of game just by using the same equipement. Maybe he’s a fool for leaving all that money on the outside of his bank account. Different in a way that makes looking at the picture to the right (thanks to getty images) seem disconcertingly bare, almost well, umm, naked. No Virginia, that picture is not an example of photoshop in action, Mr. Moore reallly doesn’t sport the NASCAR look on the golf course. I find it rather refreshing thank you very much.

The 72 holes of the Wyndham Championship ended in a three way tie for the lead, with Mr. Moore, Kevin Stadler, and Jason Bohn all tied at 16 under par.  Sergio Garcia began the day tied with Chris Riley at 15 under par and stretched that lead to three shots midway through the round.  After that all the demons that have plagued his career emerged from hiding wherever it is that demons hide.  No more three shot lead, eventually ending in no more lead at all.  It’s hard to watch when Mr. Garcia’s swing goes all Tyler Durden on him,  the swing and the head attempting to steer the ball in opposing directions.  Then the putter becomes an enemy,  numbing the hands to the point that every stroke appears timidly uninspiring.  As it was he still had a chance to join the playoff, needing to hole a bunker shot on the 18th hole to get to 16 under par.  The ball appeared headed into the hole, getting to inside an inch from the lip before ever so gently turning aside.

Mr. Bohn began the day 8 under par, seven shots behind the leaders.  Six birdies and an eagle later his 62 left him with an outside chance at winning.  Mr. Moore began the day 11 under par, which had improved by only a stroke after a front nine of three birdies and two bogeys. Birdies on holes 12-16 got him to 17 under par and a chance to be the leader in the club house save for the bogey on the 18th hole.  Mr. Stadler began the day 12 under par, and had the lead alone at 17 under par standing on the 18th tee.  He too bogeyed the 18th hole to join the playoff,  turning the twosome into a threesome.

The 18th hole at Sedgefield Country Club is played as a 505 yard par 4 for the tournament.  The tee shot runs downhill, followed by a second shot off a downhill lie to an uphill green.  Not an easy hole at all, and as the first playoff hole it claimed victim number one, Mr. Bohn.  Having hit his second shot into the left hand greenside bunker he went all amatuer on the shot and, gasp, left it in the bunker leaving him with a second place finish.  The playoff moved to the 10th hole where both players made par 4.  Back to the 18th hole, where Mr. Stadler’s second shot skipped long into rough.  His chip shot finished some twenty feet from the hole leaving him well outside the 6 feet Mr. Moore had left for his birdie putt.  When Mr. Stadler missed his par the rest became academic.  Mr. Moore rolled in the 6 footer for birdie and his first tour win.

“This felt like an uphill battle,” said Moore, who turned pro in 2005. “The whole time I’ve been on the PGA Tour, I just haven’t been healthy, haven’t felt like myself, and really kind of got some good momentum (finishing tied for 10th) at the U.S. Open, really feeling like myself again over the golf ball, and just kind of getting some confidence back in the putter and every aspect of the game. That’s really carried through to this week.”   I’d be willing to bet it will carry through for some time to come.  He possesses a great deal of talent and is a proven winner in the amatuer ranks.  He may very well be ready to seriously contend in the coming years’ major championships.

With the PGA Tour across the border in Canada this week, GolfWRX Tour Photographer Greg Moore stayed stateside and headed to the OccuNet Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank in Amarillo, Texas.

It’s always interesting to see what the guys are playing on the KFT, and this week certainly hasn’t disappointed so far, with some incredible wedge stamping on display.

At GolfWRX, we are a community of like-minded individuals who all experience and express our enjoyment of the game in many ways.

It’s that sense of community that drives day-to-day interactions in the forums on topics that range from best driver to what marker you use to mark your ball. It even allows us to share another thing we all love – buying and selling equipment.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
