PGA Tour launches redesigned iPhone, Android apps

Published

on

The first full field event of 2014 kicked off this week with the Sony Open in Hawaii, and so did the PGA Tour’s redesigned app for iPhone and Android. Boasting an all new layout that is easy to navigate with video highlights, real-time scoring and various other enhancements, the app makes following golf from your phone actually enjoyable.

Upon opening the app for the first time, contrasts of white background with blue accents greet you, giving you a new, modern feel. The newly designed leaderboard sponsored by Nike Golf allows for location information such as current weather at the course, as well easy-to-find broadcast listings for the day from Golf Channel and SiriusXM. View of the leaderboard or player groupings is at your fingertips with the ability to have your favorite golfers at the top or your fantasy picks of the day.

Two of my favorite updates for the 2014 app are the course information and daily video content. Each hole of the course is displayed with a general bird’s eye view, par performance of the hole with total number of birdies, pars, etc. scored that day, current hole difficulty as well as hole statistics such as scoring average, longest drive and closet to pin. Included is a short paragraph about the hole, including history and typical shot selections played.

PGA Tour '14 App Review

The video content this year on the app is fantastic. Every video, interview, highlight, round recap, player feature and more that is found on PGATour.com and during Tour broadcasts can be found in crisp and clean HD quality. With my iPhone 5s (it’s also available for iPad) sporting 4G LTE, the picture was perfect, with no buffering issues while viewing the videos. I was able to see Adam Scott eagle No. 15, a 34-second video, shortly after he made a push to get to 15-under at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, as well as Zach Johnson’s final-round interview. The schedule for the entire season, FedEx Cup standings, all the latest news and coverage from PGATour.com and the Champions and Web.com tours can be found inside the app as well.

In a world of fast-paced social media and on-the-go demands, the all-new 2014 PGA Tour app delivers for all golf fans. Whether you are tracking Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar, seeing how your fantasy golf picks are stacking up, want to see a video of how Sergio tripled No. 17 at TPC Sawgrass, or want to get the low down on the course of the week, the PGA Tour app is your one-stop shop.

But does the app provide in depth golf fashion advice, especially aimed at footwear? I think that is what separates good golf apps from the GREAT golf apps.

With the PGA Tour across the border in Canada this week, GolfWRX Tour Photographer Greg Moore stayed stateside and headed to the OccuNet Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank in Amarillo, Texas.

It’s always interesting to see what the guys are playing on the KFT, and this week certainly hasn’t disappointed so far, with some incredible wedge stamping on display.
