Tweets of the week: Lizards, grammar police, bad greens, worse sunglasses

Published

on

This past week, Lexi Thompson, one of the most prolific posters on various social media channels amongst professional golfers, captured her second career victory at the LPGA Malaysia, and Jimmy Walker (less of a presence on social media) notched his first career win at the Frys.com Open with a quality final-round 66.

Off the course, amidst rumors that he and girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki have split, Rory McIlroy spent time in Ireland, hanging out with the likes of one William Jefferson Clinton and Bono. Also, Morgan Pressel spotted some interesting wildlife on course, and Hunter Mahan flashed his badge as an officer of the grammar police.

Without further ado, the tweets of the week.

First, we have the following tweet from Bubba Watson that proves Dufnering is alive and well, at least among our next generation. Here’s the golfer’s son striking the pose.

Next up, this item from die-hard Boston sports fan Keegan Bradley following the Patriots dramatic comeback victory Sunday. Bradley posted a screenshot of Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan’s reaction to Tom Brady’s game-winning touchdown pass to Kenbrell Thompkins, along with a great caption.

Here’s a tweet from Hunter Mahan proving that in addition to being twice named the Big-12 Player of the Year while at Oklahoma State, he learned a thing or two about grammar during his time in Stillwater.

Elsewhere, Jamie Lovemark wasn’t overwhelmed with the condition of the greens at the Monday qualifying location for the Shiners.

Playing in Malaysia, Morgan Pressel found this guy (reportedly a monitor lizard) in the rough.

Then, there’s this photo, which really ought to be called “A Tale of Two (Pairs of) Sunglasses.” Pictured in the shot from the u2news Instagram account are Rory McIlory, President Bill Clinton and U2 frontman Bono.

Bono, in the ultimate gesture of deference, has allowed Clinton to wear the rocker’s trademark sunglasses for the photo. However, he looks naked and ill at ease without his ever-present shades. And Rory McIlroy (presumably wearing another pair of Bonos glasses)? Well, he looks like an Elton John impersonator or a 1970’s Atlantic City gambling magnate.

I’ve rotated the image in this tweet so that readers don’t risk neck injury trying to make out the text in the photo. Zach Johnson, who is actually quite witty on Twitter (not sure if this comes as a surprise) retweeted the following from user AustinA22 along with a bit of self-deprecating humor.

Is the answer to the ZJ question: “If ZJ has the lowest score at the Masters, then he gets a green jacket.” ?

Brutal to throw that problem out there with no answer given!

Yeah I think that’s right. Assuming you can chain the tournament (kinda means any tournament) with the masters tournament. I think you can since it’s broader, and it says it’s a tournament. Maybe it’s missing something that specifies what kind of tournament. Otherwise we could be linking together golf tournaments with tennis tournaments. Maybe there’s no wrong answer in this one as long as you’re coming up with good reasoning.

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience

Published

on

This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.

I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.

With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.

Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!
