Furyk shoots 59 at the BMW Championship

Published

It was as much in the bag as any round of 59 will ever be.

Jim Furyk, who had never shot lower than 62 on the PGA Tour, started Round 2 of the BMW Championship 11-under through his first 13 holes, meaning that he only needed to play his final five holes 1-under to become the sixth golfer in PGA Tour history to card a round of 59. But just as Tiger Woods proved in his 59 watch at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, it’s the final five holes that can be the toughest.

Furyk bogeyed his 14th hole, No. 5 (he started on the back nine), succombing to the weakness that had kept him out of the winner’s circle since his three-victory season in 2010 — his putting.

“It was pretty hectic down the stretch, ” Furyk said after the round. “I hit three good putts on (No. 5), but none of them went in.”

But Furyk bounced with pars on Nos. 6 and 8 and a birdie on No. 7, setting himself up for a dramatic finish on his final hole. If Furyk made a birdie, he’d shoot one of the most memorable rounds in PGA Tour history. If not, he would become yet another golfer to fall short of the magic number.

After a 281-yard drive that split the right-center of No. 9’s fairway, Furyk hit a gap wedge from 103 yards to 3-feet 3-inches. Unlike the short putt that he missed to end the U.S. Team’s chances to win the 2012 Ryder Cup, Furyk buried the straight-in birdie putt in the center of the hole for a 12-under 59.

“There’s not much I could have improved on today,” Furyk said. “So I think I’ll sleep well.”

The lowest score at Conway Farms, other than Furyk’s 59, was 6-under, shot by Jordan Spieth and Jimmy Walker. Furyk’s bogey on No. 5 was the only bogey ever recorded on the PGA Tour by a golfer who recorded a score of 59.

He will start Round 3 of the BMW Championship tied for the lead with Brandt Snedeker at 11-under, three shots clear of the field.

Yea, but if he didn’t bogey then he could have just as easily went for par rather than pressing himself to make birdies. Never know.

I’m pretty sure you don’t hold back much when you shoot 59, bogey or no bogey.

With the PGA Tour across the border in Canada this week, GolfWRX Tour Photographer Greg Moore stayed stateside and headed to the OccuNet Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank in Amarillo, Texas.

It’s always interesting to see what the guys are playing on the KFT, and this week certainly hasn’t disappointed so far, with some incredible wedge stamping on display.
