Wyndham Championship: Picks and Preview

Published

on

Jason Dufner’s PGA Championship victory marked the end of major season on the PGA Tour. Now, the Tour chugs onward to this week’s Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club. The Wyndham marks the end the Tour’s “regular season,” and is an opportunity for players to shore up (or secure) FedEx Cup positions heading into the first playoff event, The Barclays, next week.

Predictably, this week’s field is moderately weaker than at the average PGA Tour event, as the Wyndham Championship comes immediately after a major. However, notables Zach Johnson, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, Bill Haas and Sergio Garcia will tee it up in Greensboro, N.C. this week.

It’s no great secret that Sedgefield Country Club is a toothless track, ranking as one of the easiest par-70 layouts on the PGA Tour calendar. Large, receptive greens, cool (and potentially wet) conditions set the stage for a shootout this week, and the winning score will likely be around 20 under par.

Brandt Snedeker: 14-1 odds

This week’s favorite, Brandt Snedeker, enters the Wyndham Championship following a mediocre showing at last week’s PGA Championship, where he finished tied for 66th. Sneds has two top 10s in his career at Sedgefield, so he’s clearly comfortable at the 7,130-yard track.

His victory at the RBC Canadian Open at the end of July, and a schedule which has seen the Vanderbilt grad playing nearly every week for the past month prove that any discussion of Snedeker’s rib injury is beside the point. At this juncture in the calendar, Snedeker has indicated that he is in good health as the regular season wraps up. Were he not, last year’s Cup winner would likely be at home in Tennessee resting up before the beginning of the FedExCup Playoffs.

Snedeker is seventh on Tour in birdie average and 10th in strokes gained-putting. Given his quality play in recent weeks and the confidence he must be feeling heading into the playoffs, Snedeker is rightfully the front runner and the clear best bet to win this week.

Webb Simpson

Webb Simpson: 14-1 odds

The 2011 winner at the Wyndham Championship, Webb Simpson has an obvious affinity for Sedgefield, where he has only missed the cut once. Speaking of cuts, Simpson has made six of them in a row and sent up a signal flair with his second-round 64 at last week’s PGA Championship.

Simpson is 38th on Tour in strokes gained putting. If he’s able to putt the way he has much of this year, and if the golfer takes inspiration from his quality showing at the PGA Championship he’ll likely be at 15-under or better on Sunday. His score should be good enough for a top-10 finish, to be sure.

Jordan Spieth: 33-1 odds

Much has been written on the subject of Jordan Spieth’s rise this year to the point that it has become something of a trope. However, it’s worth restating just how good the 19-year-old has been in 2013: Spieth, who began the year with no status, has finished inside the top 10 six times and won once. He’s finished inside the top 25 in nearly half of his starts on Tour this year.

While it’s true that he hasn’t teed it up at Sedgefield before, the golfer is clearly comfortable at courses where he has little experience. He averages enough birdies (3.6 per round) to contend at Sedgefield this week, and he’ll be looking to bounce back after a missed cut at the PGA Championship.

If you’re looking for a sleeper pick, consider Jordan Spieth this week.

I agree Ben Jordan Spieth is a really good chance this week at odds. He just keeps performing every time he tees it up on the PGA Tour.

It’s scary to think just how good this young man could end up being.
