How often do pros change their wedges? How often should you?

Published

on

Change your grips before they become greased poles. Replace your spikes before the soles of your shoes look more like slippers. Get a new glove before you can see two-thirds of your palm. Among the things every golfer knows about their equipment but sometimes ignores, the fact that fresh grooves perform better is high on the list. All the more true with regard to wedges, where generating consistent, maximal spin is all the more important. In fact, Titleist Vokey wedge rep Aaron Dill told our Andrew Tursky that spin is “one of the most important parts of wedge play.”

Now, it’s easy to see the grooves on a five-year-old wedge that’s been hit thousands of times are not at the same level of sharpness as, say, an off-the-rack Vokey SM10. But where is the point when performance begins to suffer? When does “spin decay,” as Titliest calls it, start to happen? How can the best players in the game tell?

Noting that spin decay happens more rapidly in higher-lofted wedges, Dill says players begin to see erratic carry numbers. “Some are going to go long, some are short. Most of them, however, are to go short because they spend all their energy going up into the sky,” Dill said, noting that when a player’s launch angle begins creeping up, new wedges are in order.

The next question, of course, is how often does this happen? More to the point, how often do pros change wedges? Dill indicated a lower-lofted wedge, say, 46 or 50 degrees, can last a player six to 12 months, then said, “The tricky thing comes when you start adding more loft because now that strike, that connection between the ball and the face is more oblique and glancing. So if there’s anything in between the ball and the face of the wedge, you could see this slipping, skidding, sliding effect, which makes that golf ball go up in the air is reduced — and the carries are erratic.”

Thus, it’s not surprising players replace their highest-lofted wedges every six to eight weeks.

Now, for the more technically inclined, that is, the GolfWRXers regularly practicing on launch monitors, spin numbers in the 10-11,000 RPM range are the target, as is a launch window under 30 degrees.

“If you can help players find low launch windows, they’re hitting their carry numbers, they have great spin and stopping power, and you’re essentially giving them that perfect combination,” Dill said.

For those of us not playing (or practicing) as much as the pros do, mileage may vary. However, paying attention to the signs Dill indicated will let you know when you need fresher grooves to play your best golf.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
