Equipment: Howell’s search for improvement

Can an equipment change make you a better golfer? For Charles Howell III, the answer is yes.

Howell joined Mizuno as a brand ambassador in January, but his contract with the Japanese sports equipment company allows him the freedom to put certain non-Mizuno equipment in his bag.

That flexibility is important for Howell, who believes testing different equipment is a necessary part of improving his game.

“I love trying equipment,” Howell said in an interview with GolfWRX. “I think it’s fun. It keeps (golf) exciting and interesting.”

Howell had his best finish in the PGA TOUR race for the FedExCup since 2007 using Mizuno’s MP-59 irons and MP T-11 wedges. He improved from 54th to 22nd in greens in regulation after the switch to Mizuno irons in 2011, and remained one of the TOUR’s top scramblers from inside 30 yards

“The Mizuno wedges, actually for me, I spun them the most,” he said. “I don’t have to use their wedges, but I spun them the most.”

Howell has tried many different brands of drivers in recent years – Callaway, Ping, TaylorMade and Titleist, to name a few. Since March, he has been using a PING G15 Fujikura Motore Speeder VC 7.0 extra-stiff shaft..

Howell also uses a Callaway Big Bertha Diablo 15 degree 3 wood with a Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki 83 x5ct extra-stiff shaft, a PING i15 20 degree hybrid and an Odyssey White Ice D.A.R.T. belly putter.
