Perfect In Pink – Poulter Wins Accenture Match Play

Published

on

Ian Poulter Wins Accenture Match PlayIn a dashing coral ensemble England’s Ian Poulter proved there is substance to match his fashion today in winning the World Golf Championships – Accenture Match Play. In completing his perfect record of match play for the week the 2000 European Tour Rookie of Year dismissed his fellow countryman Paul Casey 4&2.

Poulter displayed great poise in the match, clearly working to keep his emotions in check as much as possible. He was down by a hole early after 2 holes but quickly established a lead that he would not relinquish for the entire day. He did that not with a just a flurry of birdies, but a remarkable ability to recover from any errant shot.

Even in the final few holes, when nerves are normally jumpy, Poulter hit incredible short game shots that required the most delicate precision. With just a 2-hole lead coming down the stretch he defended his margin mightily.

“There were no nerves at all; I felt quite comfortable all day,” said Poulter immediately after closing out Casey on the 33rd hole of their match.

In fact Poulter looked quite comfortable all week in disposing of his opponents. In order he took down Justin Leonard (19 holes), Adam Scott (2&1), Jeev Milkha Singh (5&4), and Thongchai Jaidee (1up) in Jones Bracket play. He then walloped Sergio Garcia 7&6 to show he was on form and ready for his ascension to the top at a PGA Tour event.

“This feels really, really nice. It’s been a long time coming,” Poulter remarked when asked about finally getting his first win on the tour. “I was in great form coming into today. I was ready.”

Despite bombing drives past Poulter all day Paul Casey did not look particularly sharp in the final. Likely endurance was a bit of a fact as he spent pretty much every daylight hour on Saturday competing on the course. As Casey and Villegas fought their semi-final battle Poulter made himself busy sending out updates to his nearly 1 million Twitter followers from the comfort of a hot bath. Casey’s early 5&4 victories throughout match play hit a bit brick wall when the battle with Villegas, all 24 holes of it, was forced just past sunrise this morning.

In the consolation final Camillo Villegas steamrolled Sergio Garcia by a tally of 5&4. Villegas said he would have dearly loved to have been in the final but he was content with a bronze medal placing. Still working to regain his form of past years he has been working hard on his game and remarked that he is trying make it more fun for himself this year.

With the win Ian Poulter earned a first place prize of (USD) $1.4 million along with 550 FedEx points.  When the official World Golf Rankings are released Monday he should move to #5.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
