8 things Cheyenne Woods can learn from Uncle Tiger

Published

on

Cheyenne Woods, niece of Tiger Woods, has earned full LPGA Tour status for 2015 after finishing T11 at the final stage of LPGA Tour Qualifying Tournament.

Cheyenne is better known for being Tiger’s niece than for her golf game, but what many people don’t realize is that the 24-year-old has been quite the successful golfer in her own right.

She played four years on the Wake Forest University Women’s golf team where she was a two-time All-American and three time All-ACC honoree. In 2009, the summer after her sophomore year, she received a sponsor’s exemption to play in the Wegmans LPGA, where she missed the cut by four shots. She turned professional in 2012, and won for the first time as a pro on the SunCoast Ladies Series mini-tour. In 2013, she finished 78th on the Ladies European Tour Order of Merit and in 2014, she won the Australian Ladies Masters, her first major professional-tour victory.

With her new LPGA Tour card, she will have a chance to test her game against the best women golfers in the world. Her Uncle Tiger laid the blueprint for how to be a successful professional golfer in the modern age and make a bunch of money, but he also made mistakes along the way as well.

Let’s look at what she can learn — both the good and the bad — from Uncle Tiger.

No. 1: The Fist pump

TigerFistPump

Tiger Woods tops most lists of golfers who are fun to watch, but sadly it’s a short list. Very few professional golfers are able to engage casual fans with their on-course charisma, which is why when anything out of the ordinary (like this) happens, it’s sure to become a leading golf story.

Tiger’s trademark move is the fist pump, which we’ve seen during epic showdowns at majors, hole-in-ones and unlikely hole-outs. It appears that Cheyenne has already inherited her Uncle’s million-dollar smile, and that’s a great first step toward a marketable charisma.

Cheyenne, you can point, too, but it’s a little riskier. Timing is everything.

No. 2: Stick to the courses where you have found success

TigerWoodsArnoldPalmer

Throughout his career, Tiger has made a killing at venues with which he’s familiar. He’s won eight times at Arnie’s Bay Hill Invitational at Bay Hill, eight times at Torrey Pines, including the Farmers Insurance (7 times) and the 2008 U.S. Open, and eight times at Firestone Country Club, where he won the WGC-Bridgestone.

Those wins account for a total of 24 wins on just three courses (and 24 of Tiger’s 79 PGA Tour wins). He’s also won 42 events on just seven courses — Bay Hill (8), Torrey Pines (8), Firestone (8), Muirfield Village (5), Cog Hill (5), Augusta National (4) and Doral (4). That’s more than 50 percent of his PGA Tour victories.

Like Tiger, Cheyenne should figure out what courses suit her best. It’s easier to do once a golfer secures a multi-year exemption on their respective tour, but we have confidence Cheyenne will figure it out.

No. 3: Don’t go chasing waterfalls

WOODS HARMON

Try not to change instructors, become obsessed with perfection, or chase a certain number — perhaps 19? — too obsessively. Work hard at your game, and once you’ve found a successful move own it.

Translation: Please stick to the rivers and lakes that you’re used to.

No. 4: Do an interview with Dan Jenkins

DanJenkinsTiger

Trust us here, do the interview. If you don’t, Jenkins might stake a fake one that will invariably make you furious. Just answer a few questions to all the big-name writers and make it easy on yourself.

No. 5: Don’t train with the military

tiger_humvee2

There’s nothing wrong with staying healthy and fit to improve your longevity on Tour, avoid injuries and maintain quality of overall health — but maybe training with the Navy SEALS is a bit excessive. Remember, everything in moderation.

No. 6: Be charitable with your winnings

TigerCharity

OK, maybe you won’t have millions and millions to offer, and building a charity empire like the Tiger Woods Foundation may be out of reach, but anything you do with the right intentions will make a difference. Tiger’s charitable efforts are the best lesson here, so put a gold star next to this one.

No. 7: Find a rival

TigerPhil

Nothing in sports is more intriguing than a rivalry. Tiger’s biggest rival was Phil Mickelson, and every shot between the two has been worth watching.

If you’re taking suggestions, Michelle Wie is a nice place to start. Maybe that’s asking for a lot from Cheyenne since she’s only an LPGA Tour rookie, but we’re open to the possibility.

No. 8: Don’t be an idiot on social media

TigerWoods-twitter

Say what you want about Tiger, but he handles his social media accounts and website with class. Have you ever heard of Tiger sending insensitive tweets or posting late-night photos to Facebook? No, you haven’t. Maybe it’s because Tiger doesn’t even have the passwords to access those accounts, but that’s beside the point.

Handle your social media accounts with class — it will steer you away from any unnecessary controversy. Cheyenne’s 35.8K Twitter followers pale in comparison to Woods’ 4.15 million Twitter followers, but she’s off to a classy start.

Cheyenne Woods is a very professional woman golfer who can play the game well and is charming and personable, her career will blossom through her own abilities,it’s all very well Golfwrx giving schoolchildren the opportunity to write articles but I fail to see the wisdom in publishing them.

Leave this girl alone. I know she is TW’s niece, just let her success on the links make her popular and noteworthy of journalistic praise.

The girl hasn’t done squat and all the media flunkies are salivating over a female tiger. She’ll get in any tournament she wants. Does any other professional golfer have their nose pierced?

Sit right over here and listen to your Uncle Tiger. Want to borrow my fist pump?

Sounds like mocking Tiger quite a bit. Isn’t this a little unearned? Why? Because he quarreled with your journalist fellow, old sack Dan Jenkins?

Dan Jenkins mocks Tiger, you mock Tiger.. not even funny. He is greater than one thousand of you combined.
